Awarded by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), FIA is a flexible suite of entry-level accounting awards focusing on the core skills of financial accounting and management accounting and audit at international standards. The awards are suitable for those who plan to start out in accounting, finance and audit profession but have no formal qualifications.

ACCA’s suite of entry-level awards – Foundations in Accountancy – has been developed with employers in mind. This suite of qualifications will provide you with access to competent and ethical technicians, trained to consistent standards, with built-in flexibility to allow for skills to be tailored meeting different business needs and environments.

To get the qualification you will need to take an exam with the ACCA.

Entry Requirement

No formal academic qualifications Students with any formal academic qualifications can register to take exams at any level within Foundations in Accountancy. There is no requirement to complete the Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting.

The course is divided into two main topics (FA2 and MA2) which covers:


  1. Explain generally accepted accounting principles and concepts
  2. Outline the principles and process of basic bookkeeping
  3. Preparing journals and ledger accounts
  4. Record transactions and events
  5. Prepare a trial balance (including identifying and correcting errors)
  6. Reconcile the control accounts and cashbook
  7. Extending the trial balance, year end adjustments and final accounts
  8. Account for partnerships


  1. Explain the role of costing within the organisation and how costs are classified
  2. Describe and record costs by classification
  3. Explain and apply cost accounting techniques
  4. Use management accounting techniques to make and support decision-making
  5. Explain principles of cash management
  6. Apply and use computer spreadsheets in Microsoft excel


The course will take approximately 250 hours to complete
